How Shanghai Actually Works: Neighborhoods, Walks & Bund Hacks

First-Timer Urban Playbook β€’ Metro Lines 2 & 10 β€’ Tested 2026

Shanghai is China's most cosmopolitan and accessible gateway. For travelers, it combines 1920s European heritage mansions with gleaming Blade Runner-esque skyscrapers. Here is what trip reports consistently recommend for an effortless, scam-free visit.

1. The #1 Walking Zone: Former French Concession

If you only do one self-guided walking tour, skip commercial Nanjing East Road. Instead, ride the metro to South Shaanxi Road (ι™•θ₯Ώε—θ·―) or Shanghai Library and explore the plane-tree-lined streets of the French Concession:

  • Wukang Road (ζ¦εΊ·θ·―): The iconic Wukang Mansion flatiron building, specialty pour-over coffee shops, and quiet residential villas.
  • Anfu Road & Julu Road: Independent fashion boutiques, bakery bistros, and relaxed outdoor terraces.

2. The Bund Without the Crushing Crowds

The central Bund promenade (ε€–ζ»©) near East Nanjing Road packs hundreds of thousands of domestic tourists every evening at 7:00 PM when the architectural lighting illuminates. To enjoy the skyline peacefully:

  • Head to the North Bund (εŒ—ε€–ζ»©): Walk north across the historic Waibaidu Bridge. The park promenade here gives a direct, elevated angle of the futuristic Oriental Pearl Tower and Shanghai Tower with a fraction of the foot traffic.
  • The 2-RMB Public Ferry: Take the Jinling East Road ferry to Dongchang Road (桦东). It costs just 2 RMB (scanned with your Alipay transit QR code), takes 5 minutes across the Huangpu River, and delivers million-dollar skyline views on the open deck.

3. Transit: The Line 2 & Line 10 Axis

Shanghai's 20-line subway system is the largest in the world. As a visitor, virtually everything you care about sits on two lines:

  • Line 2 (Green): Connects Hongqiao Railway Station & Airport (West) through Jing'an Temple, People's Square, and Lujiazui to Pudong Airport (East).
  • Line 10 (Light Purple): Hits the French Concession, Xintiandi, Yu Garden, and Hongqiao.

The Airport Maglev Trick: Arriving at Pudong Airport (PVG), you can ride the 430 km/h Maglev magnetic-levitation train to Longyang Road Station in just 7.5 minutes (show your same-day flight boarding pass for a discount to 40 RMB).
